Student Starter Packs Explained: What's Inside and Is It Worth It?
If you’ve never heard the phrase before, a ‘student starter pack’ probably sounds like a gimmick. It isn’t. It’s a box of essentials you’d otherwise need to buy, carry, and set up yourself, delivered straight to your new home before you arrive.
With the help of our partners from UNPACKED, today we’ll be breaking down their full range of both bedding and kitchen packs. We’ll explore exactly what’s inside each pack, what they cost, and why it’s so worthwhile for students making their move to university this year.

Bedding Packs
Student Bedding Pack, from £79.00
Includes a 10.5 tog duvet, a twin pack of 500gsm pillows, an 180TC fitted sheet, and an 180TC duvet set with two pillowcases. Classic white, weighs around 6kg.
Luxury Bedding Pack, from £119.00
A step up in materials. A 10.5 tog microfibre duvet, two 650gsm microfibre pillows, a 300TC cotton fitted sheet, and a 300TC cotton duvet set with two pillowcases, all in white.
Ultimate Bedding Pack, from £199.00
The top tier. A fitted sheet, a 1000TC sateen pin stripe duvet set with two pillowcases, an additional pair of pillowcases, four 650gsm microfibre pillows, and a 10.5 tog microfibre quilt. Made from a cotton-rich blend (seventy per cent cotton, thirty per cent polyester).
All three bedding packs are sized to fit standard Uni beds, from single to king, and are non-allergenic and machine washable. Every pack, kitchen or bedding is delivered in one box, labelled with your name and room number, and waiting for you on arrival.
How Worthwhile is it?
It’s a fair instinct to think you could piece all this together yourself. Sometimes you could. But factor in what you’re actually paying for: not just the items, but the time spent researching, buying, and transporting them, and the certainty that everything will fit, match, and be there when you arrive. For students moving a significant distance, especially internationally, or without easy access to a car on move-in day, that convenience carries value.
Shipping is free on UK orders above £120.00. Below that, it’s £9.99, so it’s worth checking whether combining a kitchen and bedding pack, or opting for one of the higher tiers, tips you over the free shipping threshold anyway.
A Trusty Option
This is usually the bigger hesitation: is it actually good quality, and what happens if something’s wrong?
- Everything is dishwasher-safe (kitchen) and machine washable (bedding), so it’s built for actual student use, not just for looking good in a photo.
- If something arrives missing or broken, UNPACKED will refund or replace it; you just need to email customer service.
- Orders are tracked, usually shipped with DPD, and a reminder is sent the day before delivery.
- If your order hasn’t shipped yet, you can cancel for a full refund, no questions asked. If it’s already on the way, they’ll send a free return label.
The Practicalities
- Ordering window: you can order any time up to three months ahead and choose your delivery date at checkout.
- Delivery speed: UNPACKED aims to deliver before you arrive and can do so in as little as two working days if you’re ordering closer to the date.
- Where it goes: most students have packs delivered straight to their accommodation, using the front desk or post room address. Delivery to a home address before moving day is also an option.
- Northern Ireland: deliveries are made, with an extra day added for transit. The Republic of Ireland isn’t currently covered.
If you’re still not sure which pack, or which tier, makes sense for your situation, UNPACKED’s customer service team can help you work it out before you commit.
