The University of Nottingham

The University of Nottingham is situated a little out of the city centre. A regular bus service can be found from close to all of our student apartments.

The University of Nottingham is a well-regarded university, and is consistently ranked within the top 100 universities in the world. It is home to over 43,000 students from around the world, with two overseas campuses in China and Malaysia. It is an inspiring place to work and study.

The Students’ Union provides a diverse selection of clubs, groups, societies and support networks for students from over 150 countries. It became the University of Nottingham in 1948, but was opened as a civil college as far back as 1881, yet it continues to modernise (an example of which is it being the home of the first new vet school to be opened in 50-years in the UK in 2006). The university has been rated as the top sports university in the country in 2019.

Nottingham Trent University

Nottingham Trent University is within walking distance of our Bowman House, The Glasshouse, Miura, Nottingham Square, and Orbital properties with all of our other student accommodation in Nottingham within easy reach via public transport. It is a popular university within the UK and is home to over 26,000 students.

In terms of student satisfaction, it is regularly rated in the top 15 in university polls and is rated as gold for teaching. The Student’s Union has a 2,400-capacity venue with £1 million worth of sound and lighting equipment, has three bars, a large sports hall and 30ft climbing wall, and a 100-station fitness suite. It truly is one of the best Student’s Union buildings in the entire country.

Students have the option of over 160 clubs and societies, as well as providing an in-house radio station and online magazine. It has consistently performed as one of the top post-1992 universities and continues to invest in the development of the university and Student’s Union to improve the quality of life for all students.

Nottingham Language Academy

Nottingham Language Academy is located on the doorstep of Orbital and within walking distance of Bowman House. It is a small, independent language school in the heart of the city that offers a large selection of practical language courses and flexible study options with a view to motivating students and maintaining focus through high-quality teaching provision. Whether you intend to work overseas, travel, or improve your chances of being accepted at a University or job, it is a great place to study.

A Foodie Hit

Nottingham is home to more restaurants per square mile than almost any other town or city in the UK. This is some claim to fame and goes a long way to explaining why Nottingham is a city that is a sure-fire hit with foodies from all over the country. As a student in Nottingham you’ll be on the look-out for some cheap eats of course, but there is more to life than that, and in Nottingham you’ll have your pick of a fine selection of restaurants, with cuisine from all around the world on your doorstep.

Wide Range Of Pubs and Clubs

From your very first day in Nottingham you won’t find it difficult to discover a student night! There is so much going on. Nottingham itself has a wide range of old fashioned pubs, modern bars and some big clubs, as well as some great live music venues in the form of Rock City, Bodega, and the Rescue Rooms (as well as the larger Nottingham Motorpoint Arena). It is the student nights that you’re interested in though, and we understand that.

Student Night Out

The biggest of all the student nights is at Ocean, which has many themed nights and is a student-only nightclub, as well as special nights that are solely for students from each specific university. Wednesday night is the Nottingham Trent Uni night at Ocean for example. You’ll certainly have a good time at Ocean, no matter what day you turn up, and it is the perfect end to a Nottingham pub crawl, so make the most of your student days and have the time of your life.

Famous Rock Venue

At Rock City it isn’t just the large array of touring bands and live music that you can enjoy as a Nottingham student, they too have a range of club nights each week. On a Wednesday each week is the official student night for Nottingham University students, whilst a Thursday night is a popular one in the city, with 2-4-1 drinks, has part of the ‘Tuned’ club night, with three different rooms to explore! Rock City is a nationally famous rock venue though and has hosted everyone from Oasis to the Arctic Monkeys.

Rescue Rooms

Another great student club night is at Rescue Rooms on a Saturday where there is a joint club night with Stealth. Here you’ll have a great time dancing to a wide selection of tunes from different genres. In this area of the city, there are so many student-friendly bars within walking distance that you can have a great night out ending at the Rescue Rooms.

A Great Night Out

Those of you living in Byron will love Climax at the Nottingham Trent Students’ Union every Saturday night. The drinks are never that expensive and there are three floors with different DJs and genres, so when you get bored of one DJ you can go upstairs and spend some time dancing to a completely different type of music!

It’s a great way to explore and make new friends. Another great night out is at the largest nightclub in Nottingham, PRYZM. Since its refurbishment, it has become a real gem on the Nottingham nightlife scene, with six themed rooms to choose from (including a cheese room downstairs). The drinks here are ridiculously cheap, so you won’t have to spend too much of your student loan on a night out!

The Sports Club

Nottingham is a truly great sporting city, and the University of Nottingham has been voted as the sports university of 2019, highlighting the facilities and choice of sports on offer to students at the university.

The sports club at the university is fantastic and students consistently compete for gold medals at the Olympic, Commonwealth and University leagues each year. Both universities inspire and push students of all backgrounds to remain active, fit and healthy at all times, and at the University of Nottingham specifically, there are more sports clubs on offer than at any other UK university. They have a state-of-the-art Sports Village that provides full access to play and engage with sports, as well as view top-class elite sportspersons compete.

Historic Football

In terms of spectator sport there is plenty going on in Nottingham as a city. Two professional football clubs call the city home. Nottingham Forest is twice a winner of the European Cup with historic manager Brian Clough known throughout the football world. Between 1975 and 1993 he also guided them to a league title and four League Cups. Rivals Notts County play at Meadow Lane and are recognised as the oldest professional football league team in world football, having been founded in 1862, a year before the Football Association was founded.

Trent Bridge Cricket

There is more than just football to enjoy as a student in Nottingham however. Trent Bridge Cricket ground is the home of Nottinghamshire Country Cricket Club and has challenged for, and won, titled in the last 20 years, as well as being a major host of international Test cricket, Twenty20 Cup finals and One Day international matches.

The Nottingham Panthers

The National Ice Centre (NIC) is home to an Olympic-sized ice rink, as well as a further ice rink. Nottingham is a city forever linked with ice skating due to the city’s links to Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean (winners of the gold medal in the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics). The National Ice Centre is also home to the Nottingham Panthers, a professional ice hockey team, and the Nottingham North Stars, one of the oldest recreational clubs in the country. At the NIC you can also watch competitive speed skating and figure skating.

Independent Gems

Nottingham has a great reputation for independent shopping, with many boutiques and independent gems selling vintage clothing throughout the city. As a student, you’ll no doubt want to search out the most cost-effective shopping routes for you, and there is a guide for the Nottingham Independent Shopping Trail that takes you to the best, the weirdest, and the coolest independent shops in the city centre, Hockley, and throughout Nottingham as a whole.

High Street Brands

In terms of high street brands and recognisable shopping experiences, Nottingham is home to two large shopping centres that can cater to all high-street brands and consumer needs. The Intu Victoria Centre (just a 10-minute walk from The Glasshouse apartments) is a fantastic place, where you will find John Lewis and most high street brands that you know and love, including a flagship Boots! Intu Broadmarsh is due a refurbishment, but again is home to some well known high-street brands.

Independent Culture

The high street brands are all well and good, and in a modern city centre such as Nottingham’s you would expect to see that, but it is with the quirky and the little independents that Nottingham truly shines as a city, as the Independent Shopping Trail suggests.

There are several unofficial independent districts in the city, including Hockley, Derby Road, Cobden Chambers, Flying Horse Walk, and Lance Market where you can find some of the best independent boutiques and stores in the country. Wild and Baklash stand out in particular as two stores that offer customers great vintage and retro clothing options.

The Treat Kitchen in Wheeler Gate is a fun sweet shop, selling all sorts of gourmet sweets, fudge, and chocolate, including your classic favourites like bon-bons and rhubarb and custard. If savoury is more your thing, speciality cheese can be found at The Cheese Shop in Flying Horse Walk, with a range of award-winning local, national, and international produce.

Nottingham is a real treasure-trove of independent culture, and you’ll never fail to find quirky and interesting shops and boutiques, selling clothes, arts and crafts, vinyl, meats, cheeses, and sweets. It could make for a really interesting day out, a crawl around the independent shops rather than a pub crawl!

Big Name Venues

There are so many events taking place in Nottingham throughout the year, as well as great venues for art, music, theatre, and culture that you can think of. As a student living in Nottingham you have the chance to explore a city that has plenty to offer. For music lovers the Motorpoint Arena is the largest capacity venue in the city, regularly playing host to the biggest names in the business, whilst Rock City, Rescue Rooms and Bodega all play host to up-and-coming names and indie royalty, as well as music from all sorts of genres.

Every May the city plays host to Dot to Dot festival, which is a student-friendly festival that takes place across various Nottingham venues, including those that you wouldn’t necessarily expect to host music concerts. You’ll find loads of new bands playing Dot to Dot, and tickets can be bought at a reasonable price.

Comedy and Theatre

Nottingham is rich in opportunity. Jongleurs, Just the Tonic, and The Glee Club are all real comedy favourites on the circuit, with well-known comedians dropping by on tour and regular local comedy nights for you to catch. For theatre, the Nottingham Playhouse and the Theatre Royal offer plenty of theatre, music and comedy, with the Lace Market Theatre providing some fantastic opportunities for smaller amateur plays to shine (this could be a great way into showbusiness if you fancy acting!).

Robin Hood

Nottingham is well known for Robin Hood, with the legendary outlaw talked about everywhere in the city, and you’ll learn to embrace this side of the town as a student in the city. The Robin Hood Town Tour is a fantastic way to get to know the legend and see the city through the eyes of local history expert Ezekiel Bone.

Sherwood Forest is just a short trip outside of the city, with a grand visitor centre and the amazing Major Oak, which has stood for a thousand years. The Robin Hood Festival celebrates Robin Hood and medieval times each year in Sherwood Forest and is a great way to get involved with a medieval feast of music, entertainment, food and drink.

Great Festivals

Other interesting festivals in Nottingham include Mayhem (a horror and cult film festival), the family-friendly music festival Splendour, D.H. Lawrence Festival and Nottingham Poetry Festival, highlighting the depth of interests and culture in the city for you to explore as a student.
